Stevens Towing: Building its Ship Repair Niche
Stevens Towing is a fourth generation towing company with its headquarters on Yonges Island, SC. For many years, it operated a ship and boat repair facility, mostly for its own use. About six years ago the fourth-generation leader of the family company, Johnson Stevens, decided to invest in the shipyard portion of the business and open up further to attract outside commercial work. As Ray Kinsella said in Field of Dreams, "if you build it, [they] will come", and come the business did to Stevens Towing vessel repair facility, which has found a strong and growing niche. Kurt Olsen, VP, Ship Operations, discussed with Maritime Reporter TV the assets, the people and the investments in ship and boat repair capability that are driving business today.
