WSF System Plans for a Hybrid-Electric Future
At the head of the U.S.’ largest ferry system is Steve Nevey, Deputy Secretary, Washington State Ferry (WSF). Nevey transferred from a leadership role at a cruise line to WSF 4.5 years ago, in the teeth of a pandemic. Today, WSF is in the midst of a historic modernization to a hybrid-electric fleet, first converting the ferry Wenatchee, which presented some monumental engineering and logistics challenges, next ordering a trio of new vessels from Eastern Shipbuilding Group in late 2025, the first for delivery in 2030. With Maritime Reporter TV Nevey gives a candid assessment of the primary challenges and priorities for the iconic ferry company.
