ABS Issues AIP for Floating Nuclear Power Module
ABS issued approval in principle (AIP) to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) for a concept of a floating small modular reactor (SMR)-powered power module. The design is intended to generate electricity offshore and near shore, supporting port facilities and onshore communities. ABS completed design reviews based on the ABS Requirements for Nuclear Power Systems for Marine and Offshore Applications. The AIP is the second for…
Anchor Handler Construction: What to Expect as Floating Wind Picks Up
A fleet of newbuild specialized anchor handlers will be required to help build up the emerging floating offshore wind industry. But since the industry is still in its early days, many unknowns have made it difficult for shipyards and their partners to gear up to build this fleet. This article explores complex market demand and technical drivers that help give a better understanding of anchor handler requirements for floating offshore wind.Floating wind is an emerging technology currently being tested in small scale demonstration and pilot projects…
Samsung Heavy Industries, Seaborg Partner to Develop Floating Nuclear Power Plant
As the world increasingly searches for a means to reduced carbon footprint, compact floating nuclear power plants are emerging as a serios contender. To this end, Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) and Seaborg signed a partnership agreement to develop floating nuclear power plants based on Seaborg's Compact Molten Salt Reactor (CMSR). The agreement includes development of hydrogen production plants and ammonia plants, able to manufactured in serial production for deployment globally."CMSR…
Floating Power Plants: Is Nuclear the Key in the Net-zero Energy Transition?
Floating nuclear power plants (FNPPs) may not immediately spring to mind as providing a solution to several of today’s key global challenges – but FNPP development is emerging as a means of decentralized stand-alone production of cost competitive hydrogen-based fuels and clean electricity and water, according to a new report by Intelatus Global Partners. The commercial case for deployment of FNPPs featuring small modular reactors is founded in the growing demand for hydrogen and…
