World’s Largest LCO2 Carrier Launched

HD Hyundai Mipo has launched a 22,000cbm liquefied CO2 (LCO2) carrier under construction for Capital Clean Energy Carriers.The 160-meter vessel is currently the world’s largest LCO2 carrier. The vessels bi-lobe storage tanks maintain the CO2 at five times atmospheric pressure and -55 degrees Celcius. It is also capable of carrying LPG and ammonia.The vessel is being built to Ice Class 1C standard and is expected to be delivered later this year.Capital Clean Energy Carrier’s in-the-water fleet includes 16 vessels, including 12 LNG carriers.

The Northern Lights JV has taken delivery of the Northern Pioneer, the first in a fleet of four CO2 transport ships, from Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC).The Northern Pioneer is the first of its kind, custom designed to transport liquefied CO2 from capture sites in Europe to the Northern Lights receiving terminal.Northern Lights is the first company to offer commercial CO2 transport and storage as a service. The CO2 receiving facility in Øygarden, Norway, was completed in September.Northern Lights is a Joint Venture between Equinor, TotalEnergies and Shell.

INEOS and Royal Wagenborg have signed an agreement for the delivery of a CO2 carrier dedicated to Project Greensand, led by INEOS with its partners Harbour Energy and Nordsøfonden.Project Greensand has already marked a world-first achievement by demonstrating the safe, cross-border transport of COâ‚‚ for injection into a depleted oil field. In March 2023, HM King Frederik of Denmark authorized the first injection of COâ‚‚ into Danish subsoil in the North Sea.The agreement with Royal Wagenborg marks the first deployment of a dedicated COâ‚‚ vessel for Project Greensand.

New Partnership Targets CO2 Tank Development

Provaris Energy and Yinson Production Offshore have agreed to develop storage tank solutions for the bulk storage and marine transportation of CO2.Yinson Production and Provaris will jointly evaluate the technical and economic viability of adapting Provaris’ proprietary tank design for compressed hydrogen to the bulk-scale storage and transport of compressed and liquid CO2.Provaris says that, currently, there is no ship transport of CO2 in a low pressure and temperature range suitable for long sailing distances and large cargo volumes.
